Forget the Grizwalds…

it’s a Kendall Christmas Vacation!

Craig, Adam and I went to Keystone today for our first and (unknown to us at the time) last ski trip of this vacation. Everything went really well for the first 3/4 of the day. Sun was out, powder was perfect and we were all in great form. We left around 3:30 to eat an early dinner across the street from the resort…Mexican…of course….and had a wonderful meal. On the way back to the resort, we realized the weather was getting colder by the minute but decided to night ski anyway. Night skiing can be very fun and often is warmer than day time skiing (wind dies down). However, it was a very clear night so no cloud cover to keep in the warmth. The cold was too much for me after one run but Adam and Craig decided to keep going. About 8:00 Craig called saying they were done and so we met up again at the car. However, he was missing something….my son! He kinda mumbled something about Adam “taking a spill” and didn’t want to walk all the way back to the parking lot.

So we head out to pick up Adam. I was expecting to see Adam waiting at one of the shuttle bus stops…not in the ski resort emergency room lobby! As it turns out, Adam broke his collar bone. However, he didn’t break it in the most common place (near the neck where it juts out) but instead, broke it at the tip where it meets the shoulder (sounds vaguely like the 2% statistic cloud that his mother lives under:). The doc told us that in the past, surgeons have been shying away from surgery to repair the break but are now leaning more towards surgery because the bone wasn’t healing well on it’s own. SO….we have to get Adam into see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow if at all possible. The really fun part? Our insurance runs out Dec 31! Are we worried…nope. God is so in control…of Adam, of our schedule, of our insurance and our finances. Oh…did I mention that Adam’s fall was what the motorcycle community calls a “high side” fall (the most dangerous…includes flying threw the air) and that when he fell he was only 1/3 of the way down a VERY long mountain. Not only did he have to keep going so he could get down but he actually fell one more time trying not to go too fast (going too slow in skiing/boarding can make you fall more than if you have a little speed).

I feel so badly for him. We had planned on taking him skiing/boarding 3 times over the next week for his Christmas present. However, he has been so awesome. Not complaining even once, and saying that he came here to be with his family…not the mountain. So…lots of TV and Xbox in our future (yes….the first thing he did after they put a sling on him was wiggle his hands to make sure he could still manage a controller!).

And lest you think the Grizwalds still have one up on us….Jes’ plane is due in tomorrow right smack in the middle of another snow storm! At least 8 to 10 inches are predicted! Yep…gotta get Adam to a doc and Jes’ plane to land in the middle of mini-blizzard! Am I worried….nope. Went to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory earlier tonight and bought TWO boxes FULL of chocolate stress-relief. I’m guessing God knew I’d need it.

I’ll keep you posted tomorrow and let you know how things go. Seriously though, while we were in the emergency room they brought in an 11 year old girl strapped to a back board. She fell so hard she lost consciousness for a bit. I also read yesterday morning where a family from Denver got hit in a really bad car accident and 3 of the 4 family members died. The only surviving member was a 17 year old daughter…the baby of the family. Life can ALWAYS be worse but God will NEVER be too small handle it. I thank Him that it was just a broken collar bone.

See ya tomorrow.

Oh my….Julie, you are such a great Mom. Always got that level head about you. Please tell me that comes with age! And that you used to stress out enough for 4 pounds of chocolate.

Please keep us posted. We miss you guys and will certainly pray for you all. I hate that it happened this way, but your writing skills are certainly favorable to action packed drama! I was hanging on every line wondering what was going to happen next! Maybe Kendall Media Group has a pseudo company named Kendall House Publishing!! Keep writing…..you’ve got a gift!
