Tennessee Clothes and Colorado Shoes

I had such an interesting evening last night. Adam and I met Craig in Boulder after he (Craig) got out of class. Adam’s Iphone was messing up so he wanted to go to the Apple Store to get it taken care of. So, while the boys headed for the Apple Store, I went across the street to Borders. I had planned on finding a comfortable chair in a secluded corner and work on a crochet order. As I was searching for a quiet spot, I thought I heard live music. Sure enough, I turned the corner and discovered the most amazing thing. Right there in the middle of Borders in Boulder Co were 10 musicians playing Bluegrass music! There was every kind of instrument. Banjo’s, guitar’s, mandolins, a huge bass, and fiddles. There was even a soft comfortable chair right beside them just waiting for me. So I made a beeline for the chair, took out my crochet and listened to them play for the next hour. It wasn’t an “organized” rehearsal but rather a “sit in” type thing. Their music had so much life to it. It was so much better than “perfect” could have ever been. You could literally hear their love for the music seeping out in everything they played and sang. I wouldn’t have traded it for all the digitally mastered CD’s in the world. When did we fall for the deception that “perfect” was better than real?

It wasn’t long before the boys showed up and they loved it as well. Adam made the comment that he felt like he was back in Nashville. As I got up to leave, the group had just finished a song. I thanked them for making my evening such a beautiful delight and every one of them, from the teenagers to the old-timers, smiled and thanked ME for listening to them. I asked them if they played there every Thursday night and they said yes. It’s an open group…all people, young and old, all skill levels are welcome. I told them I would definitely be back. As I was walking out of the store, I again thought of Adams remark that he felt he was back in Nashville. The Colorado mountains were right in front of me, the Bluegrass music behind me. It was a beautiful evening with the promise of snow in the air. As I was contemplating all that I had just experienced, the realization of what I was wearing hit me. I had on my Tennessee overalls and Colorado Birkenstock shoes. My two favorite worlds had met and so much beauty came from it. It was a moment outside of time and I’m so very grateful for it. Peace and contentment. What precious gifts.
